'Nkota over Mofokeng' PSL award case made

A former footballer who came through the ranks at Orlando Pirates has explained why he believes Relebohile Mofokeng should not be in the conversation for Young Player of the Season.

On Tuesday, the PSL announced the full list of nominees for various categories, with Mofokeng standing out with the most nominations.

The Pirates winger is vying for the PSL Footballer of the Season, Players' Player of the Season, Nedbank Cup Most Promising Player, and MTN8 Last Man Standing accolades.

He played 49 appearances across all competitions last terms, contributing 12 goals and 15 assists.

Reviewing the nominations on SuperSport TV, Brighton Mhlongo said he believes Mofokeng is far ahead of his peers to even be considered a young player.

"It's between [Malibongwe] Khoza and [Mohau] Nkota for me," shared the former Bucs goalkeeper.

"The President (Mofokeng)? No, move him from this level. He is no longer at this level. It's like saying Lamine Yamal [is still young]. No, you have to remove from that list.

"He is a big boy now. The boy is in a different league now, a different level.

"Let's give it to these young boys, it was their breakthrough season. So, I would give it to Nkota," urged Mhlongo.

The awards ceremony is scheduled for 29 July.

Meanwhile, Nkota, who registered seven goals and nine assists in his debut campaign of elite division football, has since parted ways with the Soweto giants Pirates to begin a new chapter with Al Ettifaq in Saudi Arabia.
