Chiefs' Hlongwane speaks on Shabalala combo

Young striker Naledi Hlongwane has opened up on his on-field combination with teammate Mduduzi Shabalala during Kaizer Chiefs' pre-season preparations in the Netherlands.

Hlongwane is one of three DDC graduates who have travelled with the senior team to Holland, where Chiefs have set up camp for the pre-season preparations.

The striker is set to be the latest in a long line of Amakhosi development products that join the senior team. He followed the likes of Mfundo Vilakazi, Samkelo Zwane and even Nkosingiphile Ngcobo.

The 19-year-old proved his class with a brace in the Carling Cup All Stars clash against Carling Knockout winners Magesi earlier this year, and that class was on show again when he scored the winner in a 1-0 win against PEC Zwolle.

The assist for that goal was provided by fellow DDC graduate Shabalala, who shot at goal, which was deflected to an on-rushing Hlongwane.

"We have a great understanding, as we basically grew up together.
"So, I know exactly what run to make, depending on the situation, and 'Shabba' knows what I will do.

"This time, he decided to shoot at goal. As a striker, you know that you might only get one chance to score during a match, so that's when you have to be ready.

"So, I ran towards the goalkeeper, hoping that the ball would bounce back into the field from him.

"And that's how it happened. Scoring the goal was a fantastic feeling!"

The pair will be aiming to put their telepathic understanding to the test in competitive action when the PSL season kicks off in August. Before then, the side take on FC Twente in a pre-season friendly match on Wednesday (19:00).
