Witbank Spurs coach Shakes Mashaba would love to meet Benni McCarthy in the Nedbank Cup final

Spurs, who are in 15th place in the National First Division, knocked out Maritzburg United in the last 32 and will now host a another KZN side in Golden Arrows this weekend. McCarthy’s Cape Town City side, meanwhile, take on Highlands Park at Cape Town Stadium

Mashaba coached McCarthy at under-23 and Bafana Bafana level.

“I so wish we go to the final with Benni McCarthy, one of my products. Let’s see what happens there,” Mashaba said.

“It’s our second game in this Nedbank Cup and we are looking forward to going on. If we could have it our way, we’d love to go to the final. We know a lot of people will ask why focus on the Nedbank when your team is lying in the relegation zone. Football is football and this is a programme the PSL has come up with. I don’t think there is anyone who does not want to play a cup game. Yes we will focus on trying to run away from relegation, but at the same time it will be a good thing for the players to go on and play up to the final of this cup.

Mashaba says it will be difficult against the Steve Komphela coached Arrows, who have lost just once in 2019.

“We are against Golden Arrows. It’s going to be a tough game. It’s not easy to plan for them because of the type of football they play.

“It’s a team that plays mostly on combinations, but we are also working on a plan of what kind of a approach will will employ on the day this Saturday. We are ready for the game. We will give them the respect they deserve, but we will definitely take the game to them.”
