The Citizens, who were knocked out of the cup competition by Mamelodi Sundowns on Sunday, will take on Golden Arrows in the Absa Premiership at Cape Town Stadium tomorrow (19h30), looking to end the season on a high.
Sixth-placed City have six games left in the campaign and while their chances of winning the title have faded, they would love to finish as high as possible on the table.
The Nedbank Cup was the last opportunity for Benni McCarthy to win silverware in his first season as a coach in the PSL, but Sundowns were just too strong at the end of the day. Earlier this season, City were beaten on penalties by SuperSport United in the MTN8.
Despite the weekend’s setback, Fielies is confident that all is not lost for the Citizens and they can still finish off on a positive note.
“We have to dust ourselves off and keep going. There’s still a lot to play for if you ask me. Yes, we’ve come close to gaining success this season and sometimes things didn’t work out for us. But that’s life and that’s soccer for you. We have to remain positive and keep on believing in ourselves,” the former Milano United adds.
Fielies reckons Arrows, who are in 12th place, are flirting with danger in the bottom half of the table. Arrows are on 27 points, just four ahead of 15th place Ajax Cape Town, who occupy the play-offs spot.
Clinton Larsen’s men are desperate for points, which means City will have their work cut out to get maximum points.
“We have to be careful that we don’t shoot ourselves in the foot,” Fielies warns. “Any team that stares relegation in the face is dangerous. We have to ensure that we are on top of our game and we cannot afford to slip up at home again.”
