Premier Soccer League announce financial growth from 2017/18 season

The PSL on Thursday held their Annual General Meeting in Kempton Park, which was led by the chairman Irvin Khoza and attended by representatives of all 32 member clubs (NFD and Absa Premiership).

It was there confirmed that a R54-million turnover from the previous fiscal had been recorded, with total income growing from R884-million to R938-million.

This was aided by the current league sponsors Absa renewing their 11-year partnership for a further five-year period in August last year, as well as the new broadcast deal signed with SuperSport TV in December.

Khoza also praised the efforts of the stakeholders – clubs, sponsors and other partners – in his address at the meeting.

"We (PSL) are today the largest event organiser and content developer in South Africa," said the 'Iron Duke'.

"Being the largest event organiser, we are most affected by the SASREA Act that seeks to regulate safety of sports and recreational events.

"As the largest content developer of engaging content that gets the country talking day in and out, we are responsible for all the life blood and success of the media and telecoms.”

Khoza added: “You look at the remuneration being paid in the football industry.

"No-one can dispute the fact that players have gone from playing only for the love of the game, to now playing as a proper career where they are able to invest surplus funds.

"Member clubs are making a contribution to various bodies including UIF, SARS and COIDA – these are people who play a pivotal role in our economy.”
