Maritzburg United defender Siyanda Xulu not too worried about being left out of Bafana Bafana squad

Xulu has been in fine form for the Team of Choice this season, putting the miserable two seasons he spent with Kaizer Chiefs behind him.

The 26-year-old former Mamelodi Sundowns centre back has made 30 appearances in all competitions for Fadlu Davids’ side, scoring three goals.

Despite doing well at club level, Xulu missed out on a place in Baxter’s Bafana squad that won the Four Nations tournament in Zambia recently. He last played for Bafana in 2014, when he came on as a subsitute in the 5-0 defeat to a Brazilian side inspired by superstar Neymar at FNB Stadium.

"I'm just glad that people are noticing the kind of hard work I put in, but obviously the coach [Baxter] has had his reasons," Xulu said.
"For me personally it's only fair that I focus on my game for now because I haven't played for quite a long time. Obviously when it comes to the call up i'll honour it but at this point in time it is fair for me to focus on Maritzburg."
Xulu, meanwhile, played a key role in his side’s 2-1 victory over Bloemfontein Celtic at Harry Gwala Stadium on Saturday afternoon, as the Team of Choice progressed to the semi finals of the competition for the first time since 2014.

Maritzburg will come up against Xulu’s former side Mamelodi Sundowns at home in the semis, a big test for the hosts as they look to win their first piece of silverware in the top flight.

Xulu has not won silverware in the PSL and is hoping Maritzburg can go all the way, but stresses the importance of being focused on the upcoming game.

"I'm just taking it one step at the time and I can never think about silverware now," said Xulu.

"I mean [we] still have to win the semi final, so we can't talk about silverware now. But this [reaching the semi finals] is fantastic for the club.

"I think we deserve to be there, even though I can’t say we had a great game [against Celtic]."
