Craig Martin says competition at Cape Town City is tough due to the 'abundance of quality'

Martin and his City teammates are preparing for their upcoming Nedbank Cup last 16 tie against Highlands Park at Cape Town Stadium on Friday evening, and the battle to get into the starting line-up has been intense.

The 25 year old player, who has to compete with the likes of Riyaad Norodien and Gift Links, has played 15 Absa Premiership matches, starting just eight times. He has two goals and as many assists.

“We have a some good depth in the squad, even though we dont have the biggest squad in the league,” Martin told snl24.com/kickoff.

“It’s also due to the abundance of quality in attack that makes it difficult to play regularly as everyone is pushing hard and fighting for a spot. One is never certain of your place in the starting line-up.

“The coach has more options and combinations now due to the abundance of quality he acquired and he deserves a lot of credit for that. It’s also good for the team and the players as it keeps us on our toes.”

Martin said they have a score to settle with Highlands after losing 2-0 to the Lions of the North in a league game in the first half of the season in Tembisa.

“It’s not revenge really. It’s just that we’re on our turf now and wanna show Highlands what we made off, you know.

“This time we are the home team and we need to take full advantage from that.

“We have aspirations to win this cup and they are standing in our way to progress to the next round of the competition, so we need to beat them.”
