MTN8 match report Kaizer Chiefs v SuperSport United 01 September 2018

Chiefs handed a debut to new signing Godfrey Walusimbi at left-back, with Itumeleng Khune returning in goal ahead of Bruce Bvuma.

The Amakhosi needed have to do much given their two-goal advantage from the first-leg last weekend, but that was not going to prevent them from putting their best foot forward.

SuperSport had the first chance from a free-kick whipped in by Aubrey Modiba allowed Clayton Daniels to race ahead of the defence and head against the left-hand post on 14 minutes.

The Soweto giants were being over-run by an on-form United, who made them sweat for every challenge in all departments.

SuperSport appeared more threatening, moving around the Amakhosi defence with ease through their short passing movements.

That led Evans Rusike to smash a half-shot on target on 26 minutes but Khune was well alert to parry it out of goal.

At the other end, Leonardo Castro shot straight at Ronwen Williams for their very first attempt on target following a pass from Siphelele Ntshangase.

Two-goal hero in the first encounter, Bradley Grobler attempted a half-volley from a low-cut cross by Thuso Phala but it failed to take flight.

Chiefs ended a bit strong towards halftime, but were unable to get behind the Matsatsantsa defence despite a late shot from Willard Katsande sailing wide off a counterattack.

The second half started slowly, as no side posed a threat to each other in their attacking forays earlier on.

Chiefs were made to pay for their sloppy passing, as SuperSport pulled off a quick counterattack spearheaded by Reneilwe Letsholonyane who crossed to Grobler for a thumping finish.

The Glamour Boys nearly responded from a corner but the brilliance of Williams first denied Ramahlwe Mphahlele from point-blank range and then Willard Katsande seconds later with a thump to the post.

Desperate times call for desperate measures. That reverberated through the ears of Giovanni Solinas who threw caution to the wind, with only one goal sufficient for their passage to the final.

Shots from Dumisani Zuma and Siphelele Ntshangase did little to get them in the front foot once again, with the efforts firing wayward.

That was enough to steer SuperSport to the final and on course to defend their crown with the possibility of emulating Orlando Pirates back-to-back success in 2010 and 2011.
