Straight after securing passage into the CAF Champions League final Mosimane will immediately be tasked with guiding Sundowns in the decider of the MTN8 this Saturday.
Not since the multi-national mobile telecommunications company took over as the financial backers of this competition has Mosimane nor Downs won this cup.
The Brazilians last won the Top 8 back in 2007 when it was still known as the SAA Supa8 while Mosimane’s only bite of the cake in this cup was 12 years ago when he led SuperSport United to success in the second of the five years that the airline sponsored this competition.
This year’s season-opening final pitting league winners Sundowns and runners-up Wits is set for Mbombela Stadium on Saturday (17h00).
“I think they are looking for their first trophy,” says Mosimane about Wits who are still chasing their first piece of silverware since Gavin Hunt took over three years ago.
“The game will be on the pitch against a very strong team (Wits). They have started very well, they are on fire, I think they are the team on form now and not only by playing but also scoring. But a final is a final. You got to have the cold nerves for the final and be able to play. You also need to have the experience for that and I think we have the experience on that while they have a good team.
“We really respect them because they have a good team. They have brought in players, they are like us and have been bringing in eight, nine every year. So with us and them it is not about squad numbers… I mean from the days they started bringing in (Tinashe) Nengomasha to Benjani (Mwaruwari). Let us be honest because they have also been bringing in the numbers.
“They are behaving like us, I mean Chiefs, Pirates, Wits, SuperSport United and us, we are the same because we bring six, eight, some people brought eleven this year. So it happens,” says Mosimane.
Such is Mosimane’s local standing that he now stands as the only man to win all trophies offered in domestic football in the PSL era.
The 52-year-old has won the league twice (2013-14 2015-16), 2015 Telkom Knockout (which counts as the league cup), 2004 SAA Supa8 (Top 8) and the 2015 Nedbank Cup (national cup).
