History against Chippa United as they face-up to Mamelodi Sundowns in the MTN8 semifinals

While Chippa coach Dan Malesela will rightly claim he has the best squad the club has assembled since their rise to the Premier League, history is not on their side.

The teams met on three occasions last season, twice in the league and once in the Telkom Knockout. Sundowns won all of the games, scoring six goals and conceding none.

In all the clubs have met seven times in the past, with Sundowns claiming five wins and there being two draws.

Sundowns do have some worries with their defence as Anele Ngcongca, Ricardo Nascimento, Siyanda Zwane and Msikayise Mashaba are all doubts for the game, along with winger Keagan Dolly.

Chippa have no such problems and are likely to be able to  field a full-strength squad.

The clubs are vying for a likely final spot against BidVest Wits after Gavin Hunt’s side thumped Cape Town City 3-0 in the first leg of their semifinal on Saturday.

It would take a huge upset for the newly-formed PSL side to overturn that deficit despite having the home leg to come.

Chippa have started their season with two victories, a home 2-1 win over Free State Stars in the league and a 2-0 success at Platinum Stars in the MTN8 quarterfinals.
