Rodgers, was quick to dismiss suggestions that The Brazilians were outright favourites to take the title although he did acknowledge that they are a big side.
"Underdogs? I don't know about [that]. I believe Wits has always been a good team but if you compare them to Sundowns they are a big team," he told reporters.
"Our target is to win things but we don't underestimate any team and hopefully we win. Come the end of the day if we win the final we will be happy and we will celebrate it but it's still early in the season and we still have to ahieve more."
Despite having endured a relatively fruitless stint at Masandawana years ago Rodgers does not feel as if he has a point to prove and in fact expressed a degree of gratitude towards his former employers.
The 31-year-old was signed by Sundowns in 2012 after a terrific season with Santos but found it tough going in Pretoria, eventually securing a loan move to Ajax Cape Town the following season.
A permanent move to Platinum Stars followed in 2014 with Rodgers making his way to Johannesburg two years later to begin a new chapter under Gavin Hunt.
"I think everything happened they way that it should and that is why I am where I am today. I don't think I have anything to prove against them. I've been there, I've left the club and still things went well for me. I can't fault them because I was still able to provide for my family so I don't hold any grudges against them," Rodgers stated.
Rodgers was recently the recipient of a Bafana Bafana call up and, having not featured since playing under current Mamelodi Sundowns coach Pitso Mosimane in 2012, the striker was humbled by his inclusion.
He went on to express his delight at the way in which playing for Wits has helped him keep sharp with Gavin Hunt having labelled his current strikeforce the best he's during his time at the Clever Boys.
"I think it's a privilege. Coach Gavin wants quality at all times. The fact that he sets the bar quite high brings out the best in us. We have a good team, we have good players all around and that creates competition," he said.
