Bidvest Wits' Gavin Hunt mindful of Sibusiso Vilakazi threat in MTN8 final against Mamelodi Sundowns

The two clubs will contest the MTN8 final at Mbombela Stadium at 17h00, with Vilakazi having switched alliances in July.

Admittedly, Hunt insists focusing on the threat posed by a single player is a little problematic considering the variety of qualities that Sundowns have.

For him what matters most is how they remain focused through every minute that this match will be played over.

However, if Wits have to win this trophy Vilakazi will be amongst those that Hunt will have to devise a means of stopping, nullifying or whatever term he chooses to use as he seeks to get past a team coached by a man (Pitso Mosimane) that he used to mark during their playing days.

First up for Hunt will be Vilakazi – who has started all four games that Sundowns have played on the domestic scene since his move to Chloorkop.

“He (Vilakazi) has gone into a big pond there now, he was in a small pond before,” notes Hunt.

“He is a certainly a talented player and I mean we won’t have to go back to why, when and how and all that but he seems to be playing well and has some very good players around him so he is looking in place and I think he will get better and better as the season goes on.

“About planning around players, I have never really understood that one, what we will obviously do…yes, he is a threat, he is a very good player but we can’t get ourselves into holding on about thinking about this player or that player when they have so many good players. Our concentration levels will certainly have to be better in our back third and the final third as well for us,” says Hunt.

The 52-year-old is already settled on the kind of team that he needs against Sundowns.

“I picked my team yesterday (Wednesday) and I said ‘this season has been difficult for us so far because we haven’t had too many problems but the problems are certainly coming and there is no doubt about that because in football they always come’. Do we really need to fiddle around too much? Let us see where we are and let us see how good we are, we are playing against the best team in the country.

“If we fall short then we know where we need to look and improve on. If we win good, then let us keep going but I think sometimes coaches get in the way of teams and get in the way of players yet sometimes you got to learn to let go a little bit. If you look around the world it happens week in, week out so at this point in time we have played six games and we haven’t lost so why would we want to change too much now too early? Let us see where we are,” he says.
