PSL club fail to pay R15 000 settlement agreement

Ex-Baroka FC head coach Sello Chokoe is being accused of trying to represent both a player and a club in a contract dispute.

Apparently, Polokwane City Rovers are struggling to pay an R15 000 balance in an R20 000 settlement agreement they reached with former player Thabiso Mabitsela.

Mabitsela's representative Taelo Motloung accuse lawyer Sello Chokoe of playing double agents.

Both Motloung and Chokoe refused to divulge how much the three-month salary the club is owing the player.

Motloung says Mabitsela's contract with the club finished last year, and when the player asked for the three months' outstanding salaries Polokwane City Rovers are owing him, he was told he had already accepted a settlement.

"There's a matter of Thabiso Mabitsela against Platinum City Rovers regarding a settlement, they are claiming having signed a settlement agreement with the player," Motloung tells KickOff.

"The club wants to settle with a lesser amount than what it's due to him and the boy said no.

"Apparently the following day an agent by the name of Sello Chokoe, is now a lawyer, agent and everything else.

"So what happened is Sello went to this boy with a settlement agreement document that had the boy's signature, when in fact the player never signed that document.

"That document is from the club, but it was presented by Sello Chokoe. Acting as the club's representative.

"Then the boy told Chokoe 'You are not my agent, and you are not my lawyer'.Just right there Sello changed his tune and now wanted to represent the player.

"When my legal team called Sello he said to them 'Yes I'm representing the boy. I have a contract with the boy, it gives me the power of attorney to represent him.

"Then my legal team told him 'Fine, we are going to lodge the matter to the PSL, and we are going to take this thing to a signature expert because the boy never signed the document.'

"Apparently Sello went to the boy as the club's representative, but when the boy denied any knowledge of the signature, Sello tried to dump the club for the boy. So Sello claims to represent both the club and the player.

"Then the following day Sello wrote an email to us and the PSL saying he is withdrawing as the player's representative."

For fair play, this publication contacted Chokoe to get his side of the story.

"Basically, what happened is I was approached by two parties here," The former Baroka FC coach said.

"The club owner approached me because he knew I know this boy. Then what happened is this boy had no lawyer to represent him.

"Both the owner and the player told me they've agreed to settle and not go to the DRC. They told me they want me to draw them a settlement agreement. I did.

"And I signed for the player because he had given me the power of attorney to sign on his behalf.

"I sent the document for the chairman to sign. Then the date for the club to pay the player came...the chairman didn't pay.

"So because of that I'm withdrawing from the matter, that is basically where the withdrawal part comes in."
