How Downs solved Shalulile scoring hoodoo

Mamelodi Sundowns head coach Rulani Mokwena has revealed how they managed to finally get Peter Shalulile scoring again.

Shalulile was experiencing an unusual goal drought, where he was yet to score in the DStv Premiership this calendar year.

The Namibian had scored only one goal in 2024, in the CAF Champions League narrow win over TP Mazembe in March.

However, the 30-year-old finally broke his scoring hoodoo after netting a brace in a 3-0 victory over TS Galaxy on Monday evening, taking his tally in the league to six goals.

Mokwena, speaking to the media in his post-match interview, says he worked hard on the solution to get Shalulile firing again and asked his players to simplify their football in the last third.

"Shalulile, I'm very proud of him. You know, I just asked one thing from the team, 'Can we create easier chances to score?' It's all I asked," Mokwena told journalists at Loftus Versfeld Stadium.

"Last night I wrote a whole thesis, I wanted to share it with them in the morning and I saw that they were very tired.

"The most important part of that thesis, I was watching games, our games, European games and then I started jotting down my notes and I thought there were a lot of things we did not do right and I asked the players, 'Can we create chances that are easier to score?'

"And I thought today some of the chances we created, especially the goals, were very good and I'm very proud of the players for that," the 37-year-old coach added.
