OFFICIAL: Sundowns clinch 8th straight league title

Mamelodi Sundowns have bagged an eighth Betway Premiership title in a row following a 3-0 win over Chippa United on Wednesday night.

Masandawana made four changes from Sunday’s win over Stellenbosch FC, as goalkeper Ronwen Williams, Lucas Suarez, Mosa Lebusa, Marcelo Allende and Thapelo Morena returned.

Sundowns made a dominant start in the 11th minute when Iqraam Rayners carved out some space in the box and slammed into the top corner to grab his 14th league goal of the season.

The commanding spell continued nine minutes later where Tashreeq Matthews almost added to Sundowns' tally, but the winger unfortunately steered wide from a clever position.

Sharp-shooter Lucas Ribeiro went close two minutes thereafter with a left-footed attempt from inside the area, but Chilli Boys goalkeeper Darren Johnson produced a fine low save.

Matthews launched another attempt at goal before halftime around the area but he once again snapped his lines, as Miguel Cardoso's charges went into the break with a slender lead over Chippa, who barely threatened Williams in the opening 45 minutes.

The one-way traffic continued in the second half as Ribeiro had a scrambled effort in the box cleared off the goal-line, with the Chilli Boys struggling get their foot on the ball.

Chippa closed-in to the equaliser ten minutes later where a free-kick way out by Giovanni Philander narrowly missed target, with Williams in some bother while Rayners had a goal disallowed for offside just moments earlier.

Masandawana made a double alteration midway through the second half, with Arthur Sales coming on for Rayners and while Peter Shalulile replaced the influenial Ribeiro.

Sales proved decisive within moments entering as he blazed the roof of the net from the right of the area with a cross that deceived Johnson between the sticks.

Chippa looked to pull one back ten minutes to the end with a header by Sinoxolo Kwayiba from Ronaldo Maarman’s cross, but the effort sailed over the target.

The Tshwane giants added a third goal in the final minute when Sales made space for himself in the centre of the six-yard box and bundled home after intercepting Johnson's pass, which wrapped up the title for the away side.
