Bafana Bafana head coach Hugo Broos has named a preliminary squad for the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers next month against Benin and Rwanda.
The 44-man squad will go into camp at the University of Pretoria on 13 November before playing Benin in Durban on the 16th and travel to Rwanda on the 19th.
The preliminary squad features a host of new names including Bradley Cross, Themba Mantshiyane, Jayden Adams, Elias Mokwana, Oswin Appolis and Tshepang Moremi.
Thabang Monare, Taariq Fielies, Ethan Brooks, Thapelo Morena and Evidence Makgopa all receiving re-calls into Hugo Broos' squad, which will be trimmed down to 23 players.
Here's how the readers reacted to the "Bafana name preliminary World Cup qualifier squad" story:
"Oswin Appolis. Oh what a player. We need to get him," says Minwana Phezulu.
"I'm just crossing fingers for Apollis to be in the final squad," says shezisibanesezwe.
"Eish, we're very thin in the left back position, especially now with Maela out. We might end up with Hlanti, who's certainly way past it now.
"I would take centre backs like Rivaldo Coetzee, Thibang Phete and Phillip Sandler ahead of him," says Lesoganatsoko.
"Mobbie, Hlanti and Makgopa are not supposed to be there. Now that Coetzee recovered, he deserves to be called. I also don't understand why Du Preez is never called. He is the only Chiefs player that deserves a call-up and he would make for an excellent impact player.
"But that's how it is, we can't all agree on these call-ups. All the best to the boys. At least they are guaranteed huge support in KZN," says Sva2022.
"Mobbie is going to AFCON if fit, that's for sure. Agree with Hlanti, very lucky to be there, but then again, we are very thin at left back. I doubt Makgopa will make the final 23," replies Lesoganatsoko.
"Lepasa has so many clean sheets," says kaujoe.
"Where is Riva?" asks Shikabala.
"He is not Broos' favorite," replies Saavedra.
"Is Thapelo Morena not injured?" asks Skyvodka.
"Hugo Broos is abusing weed. The boy has been injured for a long time," says Saavedra who added:
"No Kaizer Chiefs player deserves to be in the national team."
"As if Sundowns players are doing anything significant," replies Football psychology.
"Evidence Makgopa? When last did he score a goal?" asks Rio Da Khosi.
"Congratulations to my boys Bradley Cross and Themba Mantshiyane but I think Ndwandwe and Sibiya also deserve a chance there," says Sthende.
"To be honest , in as much as I'm a Kaizer Chiefs fan, I really wanted Bradley Cross to be given an opportunity, top class player. I still don't know why Kaizer Chiefs didn't sign him, when he is actually a better player than all those 3 left-sided defenders of theirs.
