Tovey: Nedbank Cup doesn't make Chiefs season better

Kaizer Chiefs legend and former captain Neil Tovey says that while their recent victory in the Nedbank Cup final is noteworthy, it doesn’t change the fact that they have had a disappointing 2024/2025 Premier Soccer League season.

Currently, Amakhosi sits in 9th place on the Betway Premiership log table, with just one match remaining before the season concludes. Their chances of finishing in the top eight are very slim.

Tovey expresses concern about big teams struggling to maintain their positions in the upper half of the table.

“Chiefs’ position on the log is not good at all. They are in 9th place, which is in the bottom half of the league,” Tovey tells KickOff.

“While they won a trophy, the league standings are always the benchmark for evaluating our performance throughout the season.

“Chiefs have been poor, to be honest. In football, you are judged by your league position.

“Given the stature of Chiefs, they should be a top three team, yet here they are in 9th place. That’s really disappointing.

“It’s not good at all. Many can be held accountable for this, including the players and the coaching staff," the legend added.

“Yes, they won a trophy for the first time in 10 years, which is unusual for Chiefs. Typically, they don’t go more than one or two years without a trophy.

“However, winning a trophy doesn’t equate to having a good season. You will ultimately be judged by your league position. Consistency is key.”

Amakhosi's next match is against Polokwane City FC, which will be their final game of the season. They will be hoping to secure maximum points and rely on favourable results from other matches to help them qualify for the top eight.
