Why Morris won't play in the Soweto Derby

The reason why new Kaizer Chiefs signing Tashreeq Morris will miss the Soweto Derby has been clarified.

Currently, Morris is serving a two-match suspension due to a red card he received during a 3-0 loss to Sekhukhune United on January 12 while playing for SuperSport at the Lucas Moripe Stadium.

Since that encounter, SuperSport has played two games but Morris is still serving his suspension.

According to a source, SuperSport deregistered Morris before he could serve his second-match suspension.

"If two clubs agree on a transfer deal, they don't need to physically visit the PSL to deregister the player; the selling club can do that via email," a source told KickOff.

"In this case, both clubs agreed on the transfer last week, and SuperSport United informed the league that Tashreeq Morris was no longer their player, before he could serve his second match.

"They likely did this by sending the league a copy of the player's contract termination letter along with the clearance.

"Once the selling club notifies the league of such developments, the league deregisters the player, making him unattached."

In this instance, Chiefs signed the player over the weekend but could only register him on Monday after their Sunday match against Free Agents FC in the Nedbank Cup.

Although the contract was signed over the weekend, Chiefs were unable to register Morris because the PSL offices were closed. The registration could only take place on Monday or Tuesday.

Unfortunately, Chiefs had no midweek game, which meant that Morris couldn't complete his suspension before the derby.

The situation would have been different if SuperSport or Chiefs had only notified the league about the new development on Monday.
