How I Became a Goalkeeper - Steve Crowley

In our exciting feature, How I Became a Goalkeeper, former Kaizer Chiefs and Bafana Bafana goalkeeper Steve Crowley reveals how he became a goalkeeper.

"I've always been a goalkeeper. I started being a goalkeeper when I was 10 years old. I was playing the position as early as primary school. I didn't like to run too much.

"So, I chose goalkeeping so I could just stand in goals. We used to watch Arcadia Shepherds in Pretoria.

"In those days as a 10-year-old, you didn't know much about goalkeeping, as the game has become more tactical these days.

"We just did what we could when it came to the basics like getting your hands and body behind the ball to stop the shots."

Who are some of the goalkeepers you looked up to?

"Micky Hayward was a goalkeeper for Arcadia in the mid-70s. He was my hero, and he paved the way for me to be a goalkeeper.

"Peter Shilton the England goalkeeper was my role model. In those days we based our game on the English Premier League."

"Locally, it's difficult to say, there's been a lot of young goalkeepers coming through. I loved Itumeleng Khune though.

"The same goes for the foreign goalkeepers, the next generation is now starting to come through. There are a lot of youngsters.

"I'm watching Nick Pope from Newcastle United. He is young and he is coming through."
