Downs legend impressed with new-look Chiefs

Former Mamelodi Sundowns captain Hlompho Kekana has offered an assessment of the Kaizer Chiefs squad following their pre-season Toyota Cup clash against Asante Kotoko.

Amakhosi wrapped up pre-season preparations in somewhat disappointing style as they fell 3-2 in a penalty shootout to Ghanaian giants in the Toyota Cup on Saturday.

The match was played at the Moses Mabhida Stadium and ended goalless in normal time, leading to penalties.

Nevertheless, Kekana believes there were enough positives on the day to be optimistic ahead of the new season.

"I see a better Kaizer Chiefs," Kekana said on SoccerZone

"I see a team that wants to win football matches, I see distances in the midfield. I see distances as a team, in a structure.

"I can see that this is a team that wants to compete this season."

Meanwhile, Nabi has continued to pour cold water over suggestions that his Amakhosi squad could be considered title contenders.

"How we are approaching this season, not the league only, the Nedbank Cup and CAF Confederation Cup, we want to take it game by game," Nabi responded to journalists when asked about Amakhosi's league title ambitions during a press briefing last Friday.

"We want to do everything we can in every game to win that game. Of course, maybe it’s not going to be possible to win all the games, maybe it will be possible.

"We are going to challenge for every game, whatever capabilities we have. And then after that, we will see where we stand."

Chiefs finished ninth last season with just eight wins from their 28 matches. They will be looking to improve on that tally when the 25/26 season gets underway in August.
