'I've always wanted to play for Chiefs, he wanted to play for Pirates'

Kaizer Chiefs winger-cum-striker Ashley Du Preez has shed some insight into his relationship with Deano van Rooyen, his cousin who linked up with Orlando Pirates at the beginning of the season.

The duo, who now play for rival teams, have been inseparable since childhood and made their professional debuts in Stellenbosch FC colours.

While Du Preez went on to join Chiefs in 2022, van Rooyen would move to Pirates two years later.

Since joining their 'dream teams', the pair is yet to play a competitive match against each other.

Nevertheless, the media-shy Du Preez has shared some insight into their conversations.

"Deano is my cousin," he told journalists at the Carling Cup press conference on Thursday.

"We grew up together, stayed together, played football together, so we know each other, we know what we wanted as kids.

"I've always wanted to play for Chiefs, he wanted to play for Pirates – both of our dreams came true.

"Nowadays, we just encourage each other. We are there for each other, encourage each other, push each other.

"There is nothing else around me and Deano, we are just there for each other at the moment," added the speedster.
