Captain leaves the ship: 'Chiefs will look so different'

One of the greatest midfielders to have donned the famous Black and Gold colours has commented on the pending departure of Kaizer Chiefs captain Yusuf Maart, who is set for a move to Austria.

Chiefs are expected to make a announcement about parting ways with the Maart, who has become the subject of interest from Austrian top-flight outfit SV Ried.

The recent renewal of the player's contract at Naturena means the club will walk out of the deal with a hefty fee.

Speaking on SABC Sport's Soccer Zone, Doctor Khumalo questioned how Chiefs would replace the dynamic midfielder.

"First of all, I have to congratulate Yusuf because that is a very lucrative one," noted '16V', as he is affectionately known.

"As a player, you need to have ambitions to play outside the country. I think it's going to be different Kaizer Chiefs because Maart played 90%, if not 98%, of the matches for Chiefs."

"And who is going to forget the very crucial goal that he scored in the Nedbank Cup?

"I think everything was probably centred around him because also, remember, he was carrying the armband. But then again, there is nothing anyone can do about it, if he has to leave, let it be."

"But Chiefs will look so different," added the 1996 AFCON winner.

Maart is not with the squad that travelled to the Netherlands as he finalised issues around his visa.

Amakhosi still have Thabo Cele, Samkelo Zwane, and new signing Siphesihle Ndlovu all vying for a spot in the middle of the park.

The move also means the club will have to pick a new captain for the season.

Previously, Edmilson Dove has worn the armband in Maart's absence, but Mozambican has also departed.

Zitha Kwinika, Given Msimango, and Brandon Petersen are all candidates for the captaincy.
