Chiefs under Nabi: Progress, stagnant, or regress?

Nasreddine Nabi confronted the referee again upon in walking out of the pitch at Moses Mabhida Stadium on Sunday but did so with bigger concerns than how the officiating.

Chiefs went down 1-0 leaving Nabi with another addition of a defeat on his list of matches since taking over at the club.

Sunday's defeat to Golden Arrows was the 15th match that Nabi has taken charge of at Chiefs since his appointment during pre-season.

It has been six wins and just as many defeats plus three draws.

Thirteen of those games have been in the Betway Premiership – which comes as the primary task for his job description.

The league form shows that Chiefs have won five, lost another five and drawn three for a total of 18 points.

At this stage last season, Chiefs were on 17 points after having changed coaches from Molefi Ntseki to Cavin Johnson.

Ntseki was sacked after having overseen 13 matches – nine in the league, three in the MTN8 and one in the Carling Cup.

In the league it was three wins, two draws and four defeats giving the club 11 points from nine games.

The next four which pushed Chiefs to 13 games were overseen by Cavin Johnson after he took over as caretaker coach.

It was two wins and two defeats bringing AmaKhosi's points tally to 17 from the opening 13.

Considering that points earned will ultimately be what defines Nabi's stay in the job, the big question is whether Chiefs have progressed, regressed, or just stagnated.

Based on points earned, they are one point better compared to last season at this stage.

How Chiefs have played under Nabi is subjective and open to debate.

Then according to the club's expectations and the fact that they now have a top earning coach of their choice in Nabi, there is little to celebrate as they are moving at an average of less than 1,5 points per match.

At this pace they will only end on 42 points, which will only be good enough for position six to eight depending on how other teams fare.
