Chiefs pursue replacement for long-serving star?

Kaizer Chiefs are making more efforts to bolster the squad as they prepare for the possible exit of one of their players whose contract runs out at the end of the season.

With just under two weeks left in the transfer window, Chiefs have finally got the ball rolling in terms of recruitment having secured the services of SuperSport Unite striker Tashreeq Morris.

More arrivals are expected.

Fresh reports now suggest that the club have turned their attention to Richards Bay FC right-back Lwandile Mabuya as they look to strengthen the squad.

While the interest in Mabuya may surprise a few, Chiefs are understood to be planning for the future.

Long-serving Reeve Frosler is out of contract at the end of the season.

The former Bidvest Wits star has so far been the preferred choice at right-back, featuring 12 times this season.

His back-up Dillan Solomons, on the other hand, has struggled with injuries, featuring just three times and yet to complete a single 90 match.

At least one of the duo is expected to leave at the end of 2024/25, however, and Amakhosi are not taking any chances over the risk of being found without cover.

Frosler is valued at the club and is likely to be offered a new deal within the next few months, but whether the 27-year-old opts to take it is anyone's guess.

The Naturena-based outfit are also believed to be making efforts to avoid a disastrous situation in the current season, where they struggled to replace left-back Sifiso Hlanti whose contract was not renewed.

They then failed to sign prime target Fawaaz Basadien from Stellenbosch FC and the unfolding chaos left them scrambling for options.

Eventually, the club settled for Bongani Sam, whom rivals Orlando Pirates were more than willing to let go of seeing as he is injury-prone.

Chiefs then had to make the embarrassing move of buying a player they had previously turned down as a free agent, in Bradley Cross.
