Chiefs cool off interest in Tau?

With Percy Tau one of the top free agents, KickOff has the latest with links to Kaizer Chiefs after the Bafana Bafana forward admitted he would be willing to join Amakhosi for a particular package.

Chiefs were one of the teams that were reportedly interested in Tau in the tail end of his contract at Al Ahly.

With six months left on his contract, 'The Lion of Judah' was eventually prized away from The Red Devils by Qatar SC, who paid R8 million to the Cairo giants, according to reports.

The former Brighton and Hove Albion striker's stay in the Middle East was short-lived, as the Qatari outfit did not extend his contract, making the 31-year-old a free agent.

Even though Tau has been linked with a move to Al Ahly rivals Zamalek, the former Mamelodi Sundowns forward was asked in an interview on 947's MSW last week whether he would accept an offer from The Glamour Boys, if they were to table a two-year contract with an option that comes with a R450 000 per month salary package.

"Perfect," Tau responded to broadcaster Robert Marawa when painted that scenario.

This website understand the Witbank-born star's comments about salary expectations, should Chiefs show interest, might have put off the club, for now.

"There is no (formal) approach that has been made by Chiefs to Tau, as of this past weekend," said a source close to Amakhosi's dealings.

"Remember, he spoke to Marawa about the figure he would accept if Chiefs were to offer him. I think Chiefs might have backed off because of that.

"The money would not be an issue. They can afford that but for some reason they have not opened (formal) talks."

The latest reports coming out of Egypt is that The White Knights have backtracked on negotiations with Tau due to alleged high salary demands and the age factor.
