Change of direction for Chiefs’ home game allocation this season

The draft fixtures for the 2025/26 season point to a possibility of Kaizer Chiefs remaining at their traditional home for the duration of the Betway Premiership campaign.

Chiefs have made playing some of their league home games outside their base in Johannesburg a tradition, forcing them to travel even when they are the hosts.

Last season, the games against Richards Bay and TS Galaxy were at Peter Mokaba Stadium while Moses Mabhida Stadium hosted Chippa United, Golden Arrows, and Sekhukhune United.

FNB’s share was Stellenbosch, AmaZulu, SuperSport United, Magesi, Cape Town City, Marumo Gallants, Orlando Pirates, Polokwane City, and Mamelodi Sundowns,

For the 2023/24 season, Chiefs played 11 home matches in the league at the giant stadium, then two each at Peter Mokaba and Moses Mabhida, where they have partnership agreements.

The previous season, they played 10 at FNB, three at Peter Mokaba, and two at Moses Mabhida

All 15 home games for the 2021/22 campaign were played at FNB Stadium with most of the fixtures played in empty stadiums due to COVID-19.

According to the draft schedule, all of Chiefs’ home games in the league are all scheduled to be played at FNB Stadium after concerns were raised within the camp about travelling for home games.

That list of home matches for the new season has Polokwane City, Richards Bay, Sekhukhune United, AmaZulu, Siwelele, Orbit College, Golden Arrows, and Marumo Gallants.

Then Stellenbosch, Orlando Pirates, Durban City, Magesi, TS Galaxy, Mamelodi Sundowns, and Chippa United will follow.

There have always been attendance issues at the 94 700-seater facility when Chiefs play all other teams besides Pirates and Sundowns.

This week, Jessica Motaung, the commercial and marketing director at Chiefs, has addressed the matter of whether home games will be played.

"We are definitely a national brand, so the country is our home.

"So, definitely we will be playing at FNB Stadium but will certainly be playing at Mabhida where we are playing the Toyota Cup on Saturday.

"Then we will look into playing some home games in other parts of the country.

"We also have the opportunity to play elsewhere for our CAF games in CAF certified stadiums.

"Certainly, the balance of travel versus having a base at FNB will be managed," says Motaung.
