Champions Chiefs off to winning start

Kaizer Chiefs made a positive start to the defence of their DStv Diski Challenge title after edging Orbit College 2-1 at the Mpumalanga Stadium on Sunday.

Mswenko boys were down to ten men in the opening stages as captain Ikaneng Ramosala got his marching orders for committing a rough challenge.

Chiefs made use of the man advantage and raced in front through a composed finish into the top corner by Pheko Phago, but Lucky Malatsi levelled for the visitors a little later.

The reigning champions regained the lead before halftime when Neo Bohloko tucked in from the penalty spot following a foul on Kabelo Nkgwesa.

Chiefs remained in the ascendancy after the break, but had Imraan Hendricks given his marching orders for a second bookable offence.

It didn’t affect the title holders, who managed to run down the clash and opened the campaign with maximum points.

Mamelodi Sundowns 1-1 Siwelele FC

Mamelodi Sundowns rallied from a goal down to force a 1-1 draw against Siwelele FC in the season-opener out at the Tuks Stadium in Tshwane.

The restructured visitors were on the front-foot at the break as Manelis Mazibuko struck in the opening quarter of the encounter.

Masandawana managed to salvage a point following the second period with Oarabile Booysen in the perfect place and time to bulge the back of the net.

AmaZulu 1-4 Stellenbosch FC

Two-time champions Stellenbosch FC made a dominant start to the season with a 4-1 thrashing of AmaZulu at the Mpumalanga Stadium.

Kyle Bailey showed the presence of mind and applied a solo finish on five minutes, before Keanan Johanessen added another goal with a well-taken effort ten minutes later.

Usuthu pulled one back ten minutes to the break when Kwanele Mbayi stole possession from Liam Slade and unleashed a comfortable finish.

The Maroons regained control though and added to their lead after halftime through Turic Gamildien and Johanessen to put the clash to bed.

Polokwane City 3-1 Chippa United

Polokwane City made a positive start to the season and recorded a comprehensive 3-1 victory over Chippa United.

Chippa, who endured a difficult past campaign, were up against it from the onset and trailed at the course of the halftime phase.

The Rise and Shine took further control of proceedings with further strikes amidst the fightback from the Chilli Boys and sealed victory.
