Khune slams 'poor' Cape Town City!

Former Bafana Bafana captain Itumeleng Khune has delivered a scathing analysis of Cape Town City following their shockingly poor season that culminated in relegation to the second tier.

Cape Town will have no representative in top-flight football next season after Cape Town City failed to win a single match in the PSL play-offs and ultimately got relegated, with Orbit City coming up to the elite division.

Diogo Peral's men had won just one of their last five Betway Premiership matches and just seven of their 28 in the regular season.

They consequently went to the relegation/promotion play-offs against the Motsepe Foundation Championship duo of Casric Stars and Orbit College, where they failed to win a single one of their four fixtures.

In their final dead-rubber encounter of the play-offs, they drew 1-1 against Casric Stars, who have also been denied promotion at their second time of asking.

Speaking on SABC Sport, the former Bafana Bafana number one explained why he felt let down by the Citizens.

"Yeah, I think they proved that they deserve to be relegated," noted Khune.

"I don’t know... They didn’t take the platform seriously. To play four games and not have a single win is so poor from Cape Town City.

"They should have shown the standard of the PSL so that any team from the lower division could not match them. But they did match them.

"So, I think let them go to the Motsepe (Foundation) Championship and redeem themselves, and hopefully we will see them in the PSL (Betway Premiership) next year," added the man from Ventersdorp.

Notably, Stellenbosch FC will remain the only club from the Western Cape in the division come 2025/26, although there have been murmurs about City chairman John Comitis buying the club's way back in.

Meanwhile, next season is scheduled to kick off on 1 August with the MTN8.
