Orlando Pirates striker Kermit Erasmus prioritises Confed Cup triumph over top scorer award

Erasmus and Bucs teammate Thamsanqa Gabuza have both netted five goals in the competition, one less than Etoile's Baghdad Bounedjah, who tops the scoring charts.

However, the 25-year-old Erasmus says his chief concern is helping the Buccaneers make history and come home with their first ever Confederation Cup trophy.

“For me, my focus is on helping the team lift the Cup ... I’m not too focused on individual awards,” Erasmus tells snl24.com/kickoff.

"If you contribute towards the team winning then the individual awards will come. Personally, I’d rather win the Cup and let [Bounedjah] win the top goalscorer award, than to win the top scorer award and losing the Cup.

“For me, it’s not a priority, and no matter who scores – even it means I create a goal for someone else or even Gabuza to score a hat-trick, then so be it.”

Pirates have overcome some tough battles en-route to the Final, including hard-fought aggregate wins over Ugandan Revenue Authority and defending champions Al-Ahly. Eric Tinkler's men have won 10, drawn two and lost two in their 14 games to date.

Erasmus strongly believes Bucs would make worthy champions.

“I think as a team, we deserve to win the Cup, and who scores isn’t important. Going into the Final it’s about playing for the team and you never know who will score.

“It’s about who’s in the right position at the right time, and who’s sharp enough to bury the chances we create. All I’m focusing on is making sure we score goals and we win over the two legs.”
