Eric Tinkler on Etoile du Sahel dangermen

Based on the footage he has watched of the North Africans, Tinkler appears to have sound knowledge about what makes them tick.

“They have a few options,” the coach says. “The number nine [Baghdad Bounedjah] who plays up-front as their main striker … he is physically a good player and holds the ball up very well and is also very strong.

“He has a lot of speed and likes to make the runs in behind the defence, so we need to be wary of him.

“They also have a number seven [Hamza Lahmar] who can play behind the striker or at deeper lying position, but it all depends on what the coach wants to do in this game.

“Technically he is also very good, very dangerous on set-pieces because he really delivers a very good ball, and there is a boy in jersey number eight [Alaya Brigui] who plays on the right wing. Also a very good player with lots of speed and who likes to come inside and make it very difficult for teams.

“They lost the captain [Maroaune Tej], he is out. He would have played on the left, but they have used this boy number 10 [Iheb Msakni]. He’s a big boy who is tall and can play behind the striker, so he tends to always want to come and play inside so he is also a bit of a threat.

“And at the back they have tall strong guys and their right-back likes to get forward a lot but their left-back not so much. Two very strong central defenders who are very dangerous coming forward on set-pieces.”

Tinkler adds: “And then the coach [Faouzi Benzarti] has many other players on the bench, so like I have mentioned before there has not been a game that he has played in which he has always started with the same line-up.

“He has always made changes so we have looked at all the games and have seen the changes that he has made, and now we wait to see what he brings on the day.”

Just as much as he has familiarised himself with the visitors, Tinkler knows just how important staying disciplined will be at the back along with making use of their offensive qualities.

“It is very important for us to be extremely disciplined tactically and extremely disciplined defensively,” he says. “At the same time we need to play to our strengths, which is in going forward and creating chances, but more than that we need to put them at the back of the net.”

Senegalese midfielder Issa Sarr was the last arrival after the FIFA calendar weekend, getting back to the country on Thursday evening.
