Komphela: Tricky in the sense that…

Steve Komphela has shared what he believes will lead Mamelodi Sundowns to CAF Champions League glory as they get set for the second leg against Pyramids in Cairo.

This final stands at 1-1 after the first leg in Pretoria, and whatever happens on Sunday there will be a winner going up to lift the new trophy.

Winning the trophy will come with a handsome cheque of USD4 million (approx. R71 million), plus a shot at the CAF Super Cup against RS Berkane (Confederation Cup winners).

"We have enough quality and all we need to do is respect the game," says Komphela.

"(We need to) look at what we did over the weekend, where we need to improve and where we need to put more effort just to clarify and reinforce what we are known for.

"But we need a lot of courage because it is not going to be easy.

"Two-legged affairs are like that, it would have been nice to have a 0-0 in South Africa, just like it was against Al Ahly.

"Two-legged affairs, especially in CAF, are quite tricky.

"Tricky in the sense that when you play at home, logic dictates that you must take the initiative.

"Your supporters expect you to attack because you are playing at home, and it has to show.

"But the opposite is true because when you keep a clean sheet at home, and you go away, they will employ the same mentality and be open.

"And anyone who is open is easily scored, so you need to be very smart and strategic in terms of how you play these two-legged affairs.

"Two-legged affairs are tricky, especially with the away goals rule.

"It is important to play while understanding that you are actually playing two matches, and you don’t have to be all over the place.

"You need to understand how to play these two matches," says Komphela while speaking at the Carling Black Label FIFA Club World Cup launch.
