Stuart Baxter to lead Kaizer Chiefs in CAF Champions League final against Al Ahly

Kaizer Chiefs head coach Stuart Baxter is set to lead the club against Pitso Mosimane's Al Ahly in the CAF Champions League final.

Baxter, 67, returned to the club last month as the successor for Gavin Hunt who initially led Amakhosi to the semi-final of the Champions League.

However, in remarkable circumstances after not receiving his paperwork to be able to sit on the bench, interim coaches Arthur Zwane and Dillon Sheppard led the team past Botola Pro giants Wydad Atheltic Club - which sees Baxter's first official game in charge being arguably the biggest game in the 51 years of the club's existence.

Speaking ahead of the final in the pre-match press conference Baxter side-stepped the question of whether the task of winning the title was discussed when he agreed to return to Naturena for a second stint.

"We're all aware of the situation of the club in terms of where we stood in the PSL, how long we travelled in the Champions League, but when I agreed to come back in was just a question of let's get you on the bench as quickly as we can and in the interim I was doing whatever I could," he said.

"I had a work permit but it was with SAFA, so I was allowed to work in South Africa but not officially because of the paperwork so I did what I could to prepare the team in the interim and then when the work permit came through officially then I can now sit on the bench."

On the challenge of prevented Mosimane's Red Devils from securing 'Al-Ashera', their record tenth star, Baxter said only time will tell whether they have 'one more surprise' this season.

"I've been with the club for a few months so I've been working with the players but on the bench is special and this game is special, I think the players have worked very hard in their preparations," he said.

"We've had a lot of challenges but the players have managed and surprised everybody, do we have one more surprise left in us, we'll see on the night."
