Ramahlwe Mphahlele relishing historic Kaizer Chiefs success

Kaizer Chiefs defender Ramahlwe Mphahlele says in as much as they take pride in being the group to have guided the club to their first ever CAF Champions League final their aim is also to win it.

Chiefs travel to Casablanca, Morocco to meet holders Al Ahly in a once off final on Saturday.

"We feel very proud that we were able to get to the CAF Champions League final as players. We are very proud of what we have achieved," says Mphahlele.

"It is not so many people playing football who in the end manage to get to this level, so I am really happy. I have realised that this is something very possible to be achieved by South African clubs every year.

"Not so many soccer players are able to get to this level. We are very proud of ourselves. This will improve our CVs. Each one of us will have a good story to tell about their history in football."

Mphahlele has yet to win any silverware in all the five years he has spent in Naturena, after joining from Mamelodi Sundowns, but now has the chance to break his duck by winning the biggest club competition on the continent.

Five of his 10 appearances in this Champions League have been as captain and he knows what Al Ahly have done in the past is not what will make the difference on Saturday.

"Kaizer Chiefs is one club that has never won the Champions League and as players we are very much aware that it is important to work hard to be included in the list of the clubs that have won the CAF Champions League," he added.

"It will benefit us, and our country shall be recognised by the teams in the north in such places such as Morocco, Egypt and Algeria. In the past years Sundowns won the Champions League. It is very much important for all South African clubs to compete in the competition every year.

"We are going to play with Al Ahly, and this is one of the biggest clubs in Africa. It has won the CAF Champions League a few more times than all other teams. When coming to football it is not about who has done what, it is all about how much effort you put and the willingness to win the game in those 90 minutes. We are ready and well prepared."
