Kaizer Motaung stresses importance of Kaizer Chiefs' CAF Champions League campaign

Kaizer Chiefs chairman Kaizer Motaung has stressed the importance of the club's 2020/21 CAF Champions League campaign as he shared his wish for the team.

Chiefs' return to continental football after a four-year hiatus sees them in Central Africa, where they are set to face Cameroonian champions PWD Bamenda this afternoon.

Amakhosi are kicking off their campaign in the preliminary round after finishing runners-up in the league last season to Mamelodi Sundowns, who have a bye in the opening stage.

With the club having struggled to obtain any silverware on domestic soil for the past five years and counting, there is little optimism that they can do the job in the Champions League.

However, Motaung has re-emphasised the club's seriousness in a competition they have yet to reach the third round or group stage in their history, as he hopes to welcome the team home with an aggregate lead ahead of next week's home leg encounter.

"This is an important journey for us. It's our first time playing in Cameroon. It happens in our 50th anniversary milestone. And it happens when Cameroon is preparing to host the Africa Cup of Nations," Motaung told the Chiefs' website.

"So, we are going out there to fly the South African flag with pride. I wish the team a safe journey and victory on Sunday."
