Kaizer Chiefs will on Saturday night become the latest club aiming to neutralise the dilute the dominance of North African clubs in the CAF Champions League as they come up against the imposing figure of Al Ahly.
The final in Casablanca will be the 12th in a row involving at least one club from North Africa.
Six of those finals have been all-North Africa, demonstrating just how much the region with just six yet dominant countries of Egypt, Morocco, Tunisia, Algeria, Libya and Sudan have ruled African club football.
In reaching this year's final at the expense of Wydad Casablanca, Chiefs have broken what would have been a fifth consecutive final pitting North African clubs.
Mamelodi Sundowns were the last non-North African club to reach the final when they got the better of Egyptian giants Zamalek in 2016.
Prior to that only TP Mazembe, AS Vita Club and Orlando Pirates have been the only non-North African clubs in the final since 2010.
Having reached the final just like The Brazilians did five years ago, Chiefs will be keen to emulate their domestic rivals by also lifting their first ever Champions League.
At stake is the prizemoney of approximately R36 million (USD2,5 million) which comes with the plus of a ticket to the FIFA Club World Cup, where the financial rewards will be at least double, while winning the CAF Super Cup guarantees further income.
So clear is the supremacy of North African clubs in the Champions League that only three finals have not involved clubs from that part of the continent since 1980.
In 1995 Orlando Pirates were winners after overcoming ASEC Mimosas of Ivory Coast.
The Ivorians then got the better of Zimbabwean powerhouse Dynamos three years later while in 2009 Congolese moneybags TP Mazembe squeezed past Heartlands of Nigeria.
Of the 56 finals that have been played in the history of the CAF Champions League, 32 have been won by clubs from North African with the rest of the continent sharing the other 26.
Chiefs will be hoping to be the 27th club to lift this trophy and join 14 that have one title to their name amongst them Sundowns and Pirates.
