Why Mudau wasn't picked sooner for Bafana

Head coach has explained the inclusion of Mamelodi Sundowns' Khuliso Mudau in the latest Bafana bafana squad and revealed why the speedy defender had not been called up before.

On Thursday, Broos named his final 23-man squad for upcoming friendlies against Eswatini and Ivory Coast as part of the preparations for the Africa Cup of Nations (Afcon) to be played in Ivory Coast next year.

Mudau, who was voted the 2022/23 DStv Premiership Defender of the Season, has long been a surprise omission from the Bafana squad but finally got the nod from Broos.

Asked why the 28-year-old had missed out on September friendlies against Namibia and DR Congo, Broos revealed that he had intended to call up the marauding wing-back but had been given the impression that he was injured.

"Last time he (Mudau) was injured so and I was surprised, [when] I was sitting in front of my television and suddenly Khuliso played. So, we didn't know that [he was fit to play]

"Okay now he is ready, he is not injured again we have only [Nyiko] Mobbie only for the moment.  [Thapelo] Morena is injured, So [Mudau] is not on the team only because of that but also because he deserves it, that's all."

Bafana will host Eswatini on Friday, 13 October at Orlando Stadium before travelling to West Africa to take on Afcon hosts Ivory Coast on 17 October.
