SAFA's Poobalan Govindasamy denies Leslie Sedibe's corruption claims in match-fixing scandal

Sedibe called a press conference yesterday to lift the lid on a matter that until his five-year ban by FIFA on Monday, had been swept under the carpet.

Sedibe said SAFA sent him a letter in 2013 asking for him to keep certain information confidential.

“I got a letter of demand from SAFA asking for the limited information I had access to. They asked that I destroy their letter,” he said.

Sedibe also said SAFA requested that he delete and destroy all confidential information linked to match-fixing that he allegedly leaked to the media, and was asked to explain to SAFA how he came into contact with such information.

Now the head of SAFA’s Ethics Committee, who said on Robert Marawa’s 083 Sports radio show yesterday that he was not aware of the details of the match-fixing case, has rubbished Sedibe’s claims.

“Why should we, four years later, after reporting the matter to FIFA, now want to defend ourselves because we prejudiced someone in an investigation? We would not do that,” he is quoted as saying by EWN.

“Our name was brought into disrepute and we suffered as a result. Why should we now hide and destroy information? That doesn’t make sense.”
