Poor pitch issues for Bafana

Bafana Bafana will be faced with genuine turf issues on their latest travels to Rwanda for their second World Cup qualifier on Tuesday.

Bafana will arrive in the southern province town of Butare, Rwanda to find an artificial pitch in bad condition at the Huye Stadium.

The Huye Stadium has already hosted two games in Group C with Amavubi (Rwanda) playing to a goalless draw against Zimbabwe.

Then on Sunday, The Warriors were the home team at the same facility in their 1-1 draw against Nigeria.

Issues about the poor state of the pitch were first raised by Zimbabwean players last week after they had their first training sessions before Nigeria also voiced their concerns.

Zimbabwe played both their games in Rwanda because none of the stadiums in the country was approved by the CAF.

Super Eagles defender Kenneth Omeruo spoke about the issue of the pitch prior to their game against The Warriors whose result has offered Bafana another opportunity to remain top of the group.

Bafana will be guaranteed of top place at the end of the first two matches in the group if they win against Rwanda allowing them to open a four-point lead over their strongest rivals Nigeria who have drawn their opening two games.

Rwanda have TS Galaxy goalkeeper Fiarce Ntwari in their squad which is coached by Torsten Frank Spittler.

After this international, Bafana will have tough games against Nigeria and Zimbabwe when the group matches resume next year.

Bafana last played at the World Cup finals as hosts in 2010 with their most recent successful qualification campaign having been in 2002.

Attempts to make through to Germany 2006, Brazil 2014, Russia 2018, and Qatar 2022 were all in vain.
