Sono on Tau's penalty miss

The legendary Jomo Sono has weighed in on the AFCON penalty miss against Mali by Bafana Bafana's Percy Tau.

Orlando Pirates striker Evidence Makgopa was elbowed inside the box by the gigantic Malian defence and a penalty was awarded.

The Al Ahly forward stepped up after grabbing the ball from Mamelodi Sundowns' set-piece specialist Teboho Mokoena. But to most South Africans' disappointment, Tau failed to deliver and instead skyrocketed the ball.

Sono who took South Africa to the 1998 AFCON final, says such things happen even to the best in the world.

"The missing of the penalty, even the best players in the world they do miss a penalty," Sono tells KickOff.

"Roberto Baggio missed it at the World Cup, at least this one missed it at the Africa Cup of Nations.

"Baggio missed at the 1994 World Cup, so there are players who miss penalties even at the World Cup. In the case of Tau, I think he scored it with his heart, he was too confident," added Sono.

"You know even the way he took the ball and the way he kicked it he was too confident. But it happens you know, and he must understand it's not the first and it's not gonna be the last time he misses a penalty."

South Africa next face Namibia in their second Group E encounter on Sunday, the match kicks off at 22h00.
