Bafana/ Renard saga: ‘SAFA couldn't afford what he wanted’

Stars Of Africa Academy director Farouk Khan has commented on the claims that the South African Football Association failed to divulge details on potentially bringing in Herve Renard to coach Bafana Bafana.

In 2019, the Frenchman came close to taking over as Bafana coach but his high demands saw him lose out on the job.

According to a recent social media post by media personality Robert Marawa on X, the interview between SAFA and Renard never took place.

Khan has since shed light on how the talks stalled.

"The intention was to interview him for the Bafana job, but when we got to Zambia the president [Danny Jordaan] and myself, we were supposed to interview him but the interview never took place," Khan tells KickOff.

"The reasons being he was asking for more money and he was making some heavy demands about his technical team.

"It was then decided that we were not going to interview him.

"We went to Zambia to interview him, and when we got there he was in communication with Dr. Jordaan on his appointment.

"He then explained to Dr. Jordaan his requirements, and when they discussed it, the technical team that he wanted it wasn't affordable for SAFA.

"SAFA couldn't afford what he wanted. He wanted his own technical team, which didn't allow local consistency.

"My feeling was, at that time when I heard it from Dr. Jordaan, we needed some local guy to work with him

"When you hire a foreign coach you need to have a local guy who will learn from them so that he can continue the process."
