Broos sends message to impressive Amajita star

Bafana Bafana head coach Hugo Broos has revealed the national team's intentions on the future of a Portugal-based Amajita star, who is still eligible to represent Portugal or South Africa.

Fletcher Smythe-Lowe was named Goalkeeper of the Tournament after South Africa won the U20 AFCON in Cairo in May, with his displays sparking somewhat of a panic among local fans, who fear losing the talented youngster to Portugal.

Having only played for Mzansi in the youth ranks, he remains eligible to represent either Portugal or South Africa at senior level.

However, Broos has put those worries to bed, assuring that he and his technical team fully intend on integrating the young net-minder into the Bafana set-up.

"First of all, we looked at the PSL and it is amazing that in some clubs, the number one, number two and number three are foreign goalkeepers. This is unbelievable.

"So, how can we find a young goalkeeper?

So, I think eight or nine of the clubs have foreign goalkeepers. So, it is very difficult to find them.

"We have in the preprimary selection, we had  Renaldo Leaner and (Darren) Johnson, but those guys are 27 and 28 years old.

"I'm looking for a young keeper, 22, 24 years old, and there I am so happy with the goalkeeper of the Under 20. He had a fantastic tournament," says the Belgian, reiterating Smythe-Lowe is one to watch for the future.

"He will be with us I can assure you, he will be with us. We will wait until after the World Cup, but then, he will be with us. This is a guy who has to be with Bafana Bafana.

"It is a little bit of a pity that we don't find more of those guys. "

Smyth-Lowe and Amajita will play in the U20 World Cup taking place in Chile in September.
