Although it may not be as popular as the aforementioned showpieces, the men's Olympic soccer tournament has been graced by some of the best players in the world in the past, including Lionel Messi and Neymar, who won gold medals in 2008 and 2016, respectively.

This year, a new generation of youngsters and a few familiar older faces are set to take part in the spectacle, including Pedri, Dani Alves, Franck Kessie, Lee Kang-in, Eric Bailly, Marco Asensio, Richarlison, Eduardo Camavinga, and Diego Carlos.

Unfortunately, one of the most notable names to miss out is France's Kylian Mbappe, who is eligible to compete as he is only 22 years old but will miss the tournament due to non-selection.

Egypt's Mohamed Salah and South Africa's Percy Tau were both selected by their national teams as over-aged players, but were not released by Liverpool and Brighton Hove Albion, respectively, for the tournament.

Meanwhile, according to Goal, South Korea's Heung-min Son was left out by his national team coach as an injury and fatigue precautionary measure despite his club, Tottenham Hotspur, agreeing to let the star compete at the Games.

Per Sky Sports, the first match of the tournament, which will be without spectators due to the host nation's COVID-19 regulations, will kick off on Thursday, 22 July.
