Story Behind My Nickname - Mazolman

The nickname, 'Mazolman' can refer to many things in South African culture such as someone who sells dagga or a person who smokes it.

"He used to smoke too much on the farms in Tweefontein, situated between Witbank and Ogies, there is now a Glencore Mine situated there.

"So he was named Mazolman because he was always having a zol. There were forced removals and they tried to remove my grandpa but later alleged that he was bewitching them.

"In fact, we were only moved out after he passed on, they could not remove him. They believed there could be dire consequences. He was well known in that area during those days.

"My Dad adopted the name and even named his business 'Mazolman Cafe General Dealer' and he sold all these other things.

"Then I took over the name, I've got a company now called Mazolman Group Holdings, dealing with your printing, your logistics.

"I at first rejected the nickname but once you start rejecting a nickname it then of course sticks.

"It's a very unique name. I remember while I was working at the SABC doing sports reporting for Ikwekwezi FM from 1996 to 2000 before I joined Supersport, listeners were already calling me Mazolman. Then Sibusiso Mseleku took over after me at Ikwekwezi FM you know.

"Now that name goes from generation to generation, and I see now they are calling my son 'Mazolman' as well.

"To me, it's now more of a corporate name more than anything else. Under Mazolman Group Holdings there's a lot of companies, I have hired so many people you know."
