LaLiga match report Athletic Club vs Real Madrid

Real Madrid went seven points clear at the top of the LaLiga table after edging Athletic Bilbao 1-0 on Sunday afternoon.

Los Blancos manager Zinedine Zidane refreshed the side with five changes apart from Eder Militao who replaced the injured Raphael Varane. Marcelo, Federico Valverde, Marco Asensio and Rodrygo completed the changes.

The visitors almost had an early lead in the fifth minute after Asensio's dipping free-kick was parried into the path of Dani Carvajal, who the ball to Karim Benzema on the far side but the Frenchman could not convert.

Bilbao threatened on counter-attacks but a combination of good goalkeeping by Thibaut Courtois and some crucial interceptions at the back by Marcelo and Militao kept Zidane's charges in the game.

Gaizka Garitano's troops were pressing Madrid high in the closing phase of the first stanza, pinning them back in their own half and were causing problems especially with the pace of striker Inaki Williams running through the defence but the visitors managed to survive unscathed.

However, Los Blancos almost went to the break with the lead after Asensio whipped a decent cross to the back post in first-half stoppage time but Benzema's glancing header missed the top corner by a whisker.

With neither side creating clear chances, Zidane's men got a lifeline in the 69th minute after they were awarded a penalty through the Video Assistant Referee review after Dani Garcia fouled Marcelo in the box.

Sergio Ramos went up to take the penalty and he kept his composure to slot a low shot into the bottom corner just as he did on Thursday night against Getafe to take his league tally 10 goals.

Los Blancos were under presure in the closing phase, with Bilbao desperate for the equaliser but Benzema had a good chance to seal the three points for the visitors in the last three minutes after going through on goal but his side-footed shot was saved by Simons at the near post.

Zidane's men weathered the storm in the tail end and managed to hold on to a 1-0 victory that took them seven points clear at the top of the log, with second-placed Barcelona in action late on the night.
