Offside! Call made on AmaZulu goal against Chiefs

AmaZulu FC's equalizing goal against Kaizer Chiefs in their DStv Premiership match should not have been allowed to stand, according to renewed former referee Victor Hlungwani.

In his post-match press conference, Amakhosi head coach Cavin Johnson described the feeling as 'leaving a bitter taste in the mouth' as he saw his side concede what appeared to be a goal scored from an offside position by AmaZulu's Victor Letsoalo, after Ashley Du Preez had put the visitors ahead early in the match.

Reviewing the match on SABC Sport's SoccerZone, Hlungwani confirmed Johnson's suspicions that the goal should not have stood.

"There is a goal scored by Victor Letsoalo, we want to establish whether that goal was offside or not, whether Letsoalo was in an offside position or not," Hlungwani explained.

"Here we go, you will see that Letsoalo is in an offside position there (when the ball is played to him).

"When we draw the line, we want to check whether it's nearer to his opponent's goal line than both the ball and the second-last opponent.

"If it's nearer, that means he is offside. If you look at Letsoalo there, you will see that his leg is in an offside position, therefore this goal should not have been allowed.

"When we draw the line there, you will see that Letsoalo is in an offside position, his leg is in front, so therefore, an offside! This goal should not have been allowed.

The incorrect call is the latest in a string of controversial decisions made by match officials this season and has brought the standard of officiating in the PSL under the microscope.

Meanwhile, for Chiefs, the draw meant they slipped back to eighth spot on the DStv Premiership table with two matches to play, and it remains to be seen how influential that goal will be in where they end on the log after their fixture against relegated Cape Town Spurs on 25 May.
