Ronaldo-less Portugal record biggest-ever victory

Portugal recorded their biggest-ever victory on Monday evening after thrashing Luxembourg 9-0 in the EURO 2024 qualifiers.

Coach Roberto Martinez was forced to make a change in the Portugal attack as Goncalo Ramos replaced all-time leading scorer Cristiano Ronaldo, who missed out through suspension.

Ramos took the most of his opportunity to bag a first-half brace along with Goncalo Inacio, who also netted twice in the first half to make 4-0 before the halftime break.

Luxembourg had done fairly well in the qualifiers,  as they came into the clash in third spot and in a good position to qualify for the tournament

Martinez's charges, however, showed no signs of slowing down in the second half when Diogo Jota made it 5-0 in the 57th minute after some good work by Bruno Fernandes.

Ricardo Horta added his name to the score-sheet before Jota completed his brace on the night to put six goals on the board for the home side.

Fernandes was rewarded with a goal of his own in the 83rd minute to go along with his three assists on the night.

FC Barcelona's newest signing Joao Felix wrapped up proceedings with two minutes left on the clock as the home side picked up the biggest win in their nation's history.

Martinez's charges have now maintained their perfect record in qualifying with six wins form six matches, which sees the side sit top of Group J while Luxembourg remain in third position.
