Ex-Downs striker set to play Europa next season?

A former Mamelodi Sundowns striker has made history abroad and earned a shot at playing in the UEFA Europa League next season.

Although some foreign players haven’t made a huge impact at Sundowns, it's not always doom and gloom once they leave the club.

Slovakian striker Pavol Safranko was one of those who didn’t last long at Chloorkop, spending just the 2021/22 season with the club.

He scored nine goals in 28 appearances, according to Transfermarkt.

Since departing Downs in 2022, Safranko has featured for only two other clubs: Sepsi OSK in Romania and his current side, Sabah FK in Azerbaijan.

The 30-year-old has just wrapped up his first season at Sabah in emphatic style.

In addition to helping the club secure a fifth-place league finish, Safranko scored in a 3-2 win over Qarabag this past weekend to help Sabah lift the Azerbaijan Cup.

It was a historic moment, as the title marks Sabah’s first-ever trophy since its founding in 2017.

Moreover, the victory has earned Safranko's side a place in next season’s UEFA Europa League qualifiers.

Safranko ends his debut campaign at Sabah with 13 goals and two assists.

The 10-cap Slovakia international is under contract with the club until June 2026.
