Arsenal are facing an exit in the Carabao Cup after losing 2-0 to Newcastle United in their semi-final first leg on Tuesday night.
Martin Odegaard, Kai Havertz, Martin Lewis-Skelly, Gabriel Martinelli, and Jurrien Timber were recalled to the Gunners starting line up after the draw with Brighton and Hove Albion over the weekend.
Timber could have marked his return to the side with a goal but he guided a header over the crossbar from six-yards out as the Magpies struggled to deal with Declan Rice's corner.
The Magpies looked livelier after that but it was the Gunners who should have been ahead in the 29th minute after Martinelli was sent clear on goal but with only Matt Dubravka to beat, the winger rattled the post.
Newcastle went on to take the lead ten minutes later as Sven Botman's knock-on found Jacob Murphy, whose first touch teed the ball up for Alexander Isak to slam home from six-yards out.
The Magpies carried that momentum into the second half with Isak threatening once again as his shot was parried into the path of Anthony Gordon by David Raya, with the Englishman tapping into the back of the net.
Both sides opted to refresh their stall as Arenal brought on Jorginho and Gabriel Jesus while Newcastle coach Eddie Howe introduced Joe Willock and Sean Longstaff to beef up the midfield.
With the clock winding down, the Gunners had a chance to pull one back with 15 minutes to play when Martinelli combined with Jorginho in the box before sending his volley over the crossbar.
That proved to be the final chance as Newcastle held on for the win and will take a two-goal lead back to the North East for next month's second leg.
