Durban City cement top spot with slender win

Durban City 1-0 Kruger United

Durban City returned to winning ways in the Motsepe Foundation Championship with a 1-0 victory over Kruger United on Friday.

Namibian international Joslin Kamatuka's strike was enough to get the job done and helped the Team of Choice bounce back from last weekend's set-back at Casric Stars.

Kruger's form on all fronts continues to dissipate with this their third successive loss in all competitions and crashed out of the Nedbank Cup at Stellenbosch FC in midweek.

The win sees City end the weekend four points clear at the top of the table.

Casric Stars 3-1 JDR Stars

Casric Stars produced a dominant display over title-chasing JDR Stars and walked away with a 3-1 victory at the Solomon Mahlangu Stadium.

The host were on the up from the onset with goals from Mlungisi Zwane and Decide Chauke doing the business over the Hammerboys from Soshanguve.

JDR showed a bit of fight but it wasn't enough as Chauke aided himself to a brace and confirmed the maximum points for the host outfit.

Orbit College 1-1 Upington City

Orbit College were unable to regain second spot on the table after playing to a 1-1 draw against Upington City at the Olympia Park Stadium.

The home team didn't waste time to get going and won a penalty five minutes from kick-off, though Michael Khoto was denied by Kyle Peters.

However, Peters was beaten in the same sequence when Katlego Cwinyane headed in the near post after attacking a corner.

Brandon Truter's men hit back on the half-hour mark after Willem Nel ran down the far side to nod a floated cross from the right into the bottom-corner.

Cape Town Spurs 2-2 Milford Stallions

Cape Town Spurs unbeaten start to the new year continued following a thrilling come-from-behind 2-2 draw with Milford Stallions.

Amidst a successive 2-2 all stalemate, the Urban Warriors remain in the bottom-three while Milford missed the chance to regain second-spot but stretched their unbeaten run.

Stallions were well on their way through Mthetheleli Mthiyane and Siphosethu Ndlabi, but the host responded through Khaya Mfecancane and Therlo Moosa to leave matters level.

Venda Football Academy 5-1 Baroka FC

Venda Football Academy boosted their survival hopes with a dominant 5-1 triumph over Baroka FC on Saturday.

Bakgaga were virtually out of sight from the get-go when Mariba Kgothatso, Judas Moseamedi, Moletse Onke and Banele Gama struck at a blistering rate.

Joel Masutha's men got a reprieve through David Mothipi, but the host amplified their strong-hold in added time when Gama bagged his brace and confirmed the emphatic win.

Hungry Lions 3-1 Highbury FC

Muzomuhle Khanyi became the difference maker when he netted a hat-trick to guide Hungry Lions to a 3-1 victory over Highbury FC.

The victory boosted the home side's chances to secure a top eight spot and happened to be their first of the year as well.

On the other hand, Highbury remain outside the top eight despite seeing a steady climb up the standings in recent times after a difficult start to the campaign.

Leruma United 1-0 Black Leopards

Leruma United battle against the drop were given a huge boost after the outfit claimed a 1-0 win over Black Leopards at the TUT Stadium.

Despite the win, Leruma remain bottom of the table but have closed the gap with fellow strugglers like Cape Town Spurs and Venda Football Academy to just two points.

Former Baroka FC and Moroka Swallows midfielder Naeem Amojee found the all-important strike as Lidoda Duvha's inconsistent campaign continues.

University of Pretoria 1-0 Pretoria Callies

University of Pretoria got their first win of the year in the Motsepe Foundation Championship after overcoming Pretoria Callies 1-0 on Sunday.

Former Sekhukhune United striker Kgomotso Mosadi made the opening on the stroke of halftime when he stabbed in a timeous angled delivery from Samuel Julies in the near post.

The Romans failed to bounce back as the home team held firm to secure all the points on offer and edged closer to the top-half.
