Mabasa: I like proving doubters wrong

Orlando Pirates' Tshegofatso Mabasa ended last season as the league's top scorer, the striker has now opened up on how that title has affected him in the current season.

Mabasa clinched the prestigious Lesley Manyathela Golden Boot award for the 2023/24 season after scoring 16 league goals.

This season, the 28-year-old has continued right where he left off, having already contributed nine goals in his 28 appearances for The Sea Robbers across all competitions.

The former Bloemfontein Celtics man insists he is not feeling the pressure of keeping the Golden Boot, but is rather aiming to prove those who doubt him wrong.

"I see it as a challenge," Mabasa told journalists at a media event in Soweto when asked about the weight of the title.

"It might add a bit more pressure on me but look, I like proving doubters wrong, that has been my mentality and I think that is the mentality that drives our players within the group.

"We have heard a lot of people say things about Tito (Maswanganyi) negatively, but look at the sort of performances he has managed been putting in.

"Rele (Mofokeng), [Kabelo] Dlamini, there are a lot of players that you can mention.

"So that's just the sort of mentality that we are trying to build within the group, being able to put the pressure on our shoulders and still deliver on the day."
